The open enrollment period for the Children’s Autism Medicaid Waiver is taking place from October 17-31, 2016. A waiver is a type of support that helps people get services in their home or community.

What is the Children’s Autism Medicaid Waiver?

This waiver covers extra services that are meant to help children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One of the most important services covered by this waiver is in-home behavioral therapy, which focuses on social, behavioral, and communication skills that can be very hard for children with autism.

How do I know if my child qualifies?

To qualify for this waiver, your child must be:

  • Diagnosed with autism

  • Have a high level of need

  • Be 0-8 years old, and

  • Have MassHealth

How do I apply for the waiver?

You can apply for waiver services during open enrollment, which will be from October 17-31 of this year.

There are seven Autism Support Centers in Massachusetts that can help you with this process. It might be a good idea to reach out to the Autism Support Center near you now to let them know that you would like to apply for the Children’s Autism Medicaid Waiver during open enrollment.

You can also request a waiver application using this form!

If you applied in the past and were put on the wait list, you have to do a new application again this year. You should know that this waiver only has enough funding to cover 220 children across the state. Even though your child may not get the waiver right away, it is still good to get on the waitlist in case extra funding comes along and the program accepts more children. Other children may also age out of the waiver, opening up space on the list.

My child doesn’t have MassHealth…what should we do?

Use our free Health Insurance Guide to learn more about how MassHealth can help your child with autism. We will walk you through the application process and show you what other services your child qualifies for.
